The case takes place during World War II in a small French village in the Ardennes, located in German-occupied territory. The main character is a simple man Clovis (Pierre Perret), who works as a foundryman in some local workshop, is concerned that soon there will be nothing to feed the family, the last bag of potatoes remains, and this is even more lucky, since others do not have it. His wife comes up with the idea that Clovis should go to the parents of his friend, who is somewhere with the Germans in captivity, who once sent him a postcard, who have a farm in unoccupied territory, but for this he needs a pass, which he does not have and no one will give him this pass. He manages to get to these people by accident (just lucky) and get some potatoes and other things, and with some tricks to get to the house, where he decides to plant some potatoes, although the time is even earlier, frosts can hit. With the help of his father, he does this, and then he becomes obsessed with this area where the potatoes grow, but not only does the whole village watch the process, one thing or another happens there, and Clovis already loses his last mental strength. Despite the fact that all previous events were presented in a rather humorous way, the end is unexpectedly sad. The film for his time well shot, watched with interest
